Animal Health Mentoring Framework
Find out about our Animal Health Mentoring Framework (AHMF), which aims to strengthen the delivery of animal health services by building the capacity of animal health practitioners.
What is the Animal Health Mentoring Framework?
The Animal Health Mentoring Framework (AHMF) developed by Brooke is a structured, competency-based approach aimed at strengthening animal health service delivery through capacity building of animal health practitioners.
Rather than focusing primarily on direct treatment of animals, the framework emphasises mentoring and professional development of veterinarians, para -veterinarians and community-based animal health workers to improve the quality, consistency and sustainability of animal healthcare services.
Through AHMF, trained mentors work alongside practitioners in real field situations, observing clinical practice, discussing cases, and providing constructive feedback to support reflective learning and continuous improvement. The framework focuses on strengthening key competencies such as clinical skills, communication with animal owners, professionalism, ethical practice, and advocacy for animal welfare.
How the framework helps
By embedding mentoring within routine service delivery, the approach helps practitioners build confidence, improve decision-making, and adopt welfare-focused practices that lead to better treatment outcomes for working animals.
At the same time, the framework helps identify systemic gaps in skills, resources and support within the animal health system.
Overall, the AHMF contributes to Brooke’s wider systems-strengthening approach by building the capacity of local animal health actors, improving the quality of services available to animal-owning communities, and ultimately enhancing the welfare and productivity of working horses, donkeys and mules..
